Partnering Launches for the International Convention

Posted under 2012 BIO International Convention, 2012 Business Forum, BIO Events, Blog, Boston, Business and Investments, business development, Companies, Diagnostics, Events, exhibitor partnering, Funding, Medical Devices, Medical Supply, One-on-One's, Partnering, Pharmaceuticals, profile, search, Startups, Universities, Videos, What would George do? by biotechnow@bio.org (Biotechnology Industry Organization)

It’s here folks! The One-on-One Partnering™ System for this year’s BIO Business Forum® and Exhibitor Partnering has officially launched! What does that mean? If you’re registered for the event, you’ll be receiving your login credentials shortly. If you’re not registered, you should do that now, so you can get in to the system. From there, you can start building your company’s profile, search for companies, and send your targeted meeting requests.

This year, we’re pleased to debut a variety of new and exciting features. The biggest of all being the addition of Exhibitors in the Partnering System. We’ll go into more detail about some key differences between the Business Forum and Exhibitor Partnering in a future post, but for now, take a look at some other new features.

  • The new and improved Company Profile! There was a point in time when you had to complete 10 steps in order to add information about your company. How many are there now? Four! The change is not just about making it easier to complete and update your profile – it’s meant to consolidate the most important things about your company and allow your visitors to get the true breadth of what you do. At the end of the day, it’s not only about licensing projects, it’s about being able to list all the products and services, current and future, and the brand of your company’s work.

  • The Delegate Profile becomes more relevant. For the first time ever, the information you add to your delegate profile can be carried over to a future One-on-One Partnering event. Plus, it’s been simplified, and you can add the networks you care about most.

  • Search arrives in the Message Center. Sometimes, you need to find an email pretty quickly, especially when you’re onsite at the event. Voila! You can now search for companies in your messages. We think this will prove to be one of the handiest upgrades for our attendees.

We’ll be going into more detail about these new features in future posts, so please stay tuned! You can also reach us at biopartnering@bio.org with any questions or comments about the system.

Happy Partnering!

Voting Is Now Open for the Buzz of BIO Contest!

Posted under 2012 BIO International Convention, 2012 Business Forum, BIO Events, Blog, Business and Investments, Buzz of BIO, Companies, contest, Diagnostics, Funding, Medical Devices, Medical Supply, One-on-One's, Partnering, Pharmaceuticals, Startups, Universities, Videos, What would George do? by biotechnow@bio.org (Biotechnology Industry Organization)

Over the past few weeks, companies have been submitting nominations for this year’s Buzz of BIO contest, and we’ve got a great list to debut! Now, it’s up to you!

Voting for the contest is now open!

For those who are not familiar, this is a contest for the 2012 BIO International Convention. Companies from around the world submit their company for the chance to win free registration (which includes access to BIO’s One-on-One Partnering™ System) and a free company presentation in the BIO Business Forum®. Then, industry leaders and executives are tasked with voting for the one they think is the most interesting and innovative. Last year’s winners were Amrita Therapeutics, OPXBIO, and Agrisoma Biosciences.

This year, we have two great categories of companies: Pipelines of Promise, and Technologies of Tomorrow. You can vote for one company in each category. Plus, we’ll randomly select one voter to win free Convention Registration for the event!

Vote Now!

“While I have attended the event for the last several years, the Buzz of BIO contest helped me think strategically about different aspects of the Convention and how they all come together to support Amrita’s business development and fundraising efforts… Win, lose or draw, the Buzz of BIO competition provides a wonderful opportunity for all competing companies to garner attention at the 2012 BIO International Convention”

- Susan Finston, CEO of Amrita Therapeutics & Last Year’s Buzz Winner

Are you one of the nominees? Find some tips below on how to promote your company!

  • Put a link on your company’s homepage to the Buzz of BIO contest and let visitors know your company is participating.
  • Be active on social media. Use the hashtag #BuzzofBIO and #BIO2012 on twitter, and feel free to mention @BIOConvention and @bio1x1. We’re happy to promote you too!
  • Upload a video in your nomination. The best videos are about 3 minutes in length, and can be specifically created for the Buzz contest, or a general marketing piece you already have. If you have a video, but didn’t get a chance to upload it, just let us know via @bio1x1 and we’ll get in touch!

Good luck!

Fireside Chat with Moncef Slaoui, GlaxoSmithKline

Moncel Slaoui, chairman of research and development (R&D) at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), opened the 2012 BIO CEO & Investor Conference with a Fireside Chat where he provided insight in to his company’s biopharma R&D strategy.

“GSK has announced that our R&D budget is no more a percentage of sales. If you think about it, it doesn’t make sense,” Slaoui stated, “because, sales are a marker of R&D 10 and 15 years ago.”

Right now, GSK has 30 programs in phase III, four programs that are completed and ready to be filed, and 6 more programs that they will file in 2012.

“If less than 50 percent to 60 percent of these are successfully developed, I’ll view it as mediocre,” Slaoui explained. “If it’s more, I’ll view it as a success.”

For GSK, R&D is about making the right decision, Slaoui explained. His company takes an approach that looks at their programs in a very transparent way, so that their failures occur early rather than late.

“Failing at the end is more expensive,” he said.
